Shift Up was having a bad day. It had started when she had accidentally tripped over her rug and knocked her favorite vase from the windowsill, and things hadn’t really gotten much better from there. She had burned her breakfast of oats, lost her house key while tending to the garden outside, and subsequently cut herself on a nail in the window-frame when she broke back in. Then the milk delivered to her door happened to be spoiled, she found ants in her sugar, and one of her lamps died for an unexplained reason. Then, finally, the clock struck ten.
It was just one of those days, she guessed.
At least her misfortune didn't seem to be following her into the afternoon. She had had a pleasant lunch in town with Magmaberry, managed to get more milk, and made significant progress on her paperwork. Really, she was doing alright. But the morning sat on her mind still, darkening her mood.
